Report regarding Intellectual Output 3 completion in the DIG-MAN project

Kaunas University of Technology completed IO3 activities, implementing the results of IO1 and IO2 through e-learning platforms (Moodle, open.ktu.edu) at the Kaunas University of Technology.

Learning material created by the Kaunas University of Technology project team:

  1. Exercise 1 Design and 3d printing of mechanical structures

This exercise is integrated into the study module T130M833 Computer Engineering Integrated Manufacturing thought in masters’ study programs Industrial Engineering and Management (English) and Production Engineering (Lithuanian) as one of the module assessment methods. The module is compulsory in both programmes. Students, while completing this exercise, work in teams, thus the development of not only e-learning competencies but also improving communication skills is encouraged. The main aim of the teamwork is to design and print an optimal design bridge. Work consists of 3D design, FEM simulation, production (3D printing) and assembly of the printed structure.

  1. Exercise 2 Reverse engineering and analysis of aerodynamic structure

This task is presented as a challenge-based learning task in the study module T130B130 Computer-Aided Planning of Technological Processes taught in master’s study program Mechanical Engineering. During this task, student works in teams and competes on which group will design and create the aerodynamic structure (part) with higher (better) parameters. During the stages of this task students are going to use different stages of the engineering process: Reverse engineering (measurements), Design of mechanical structures, Analysis of mechanical structure, Ideas Generation, 3D printing and testing in laboratory equipment. A challenge-based learning task is assessed by presenting the team's collaborative work.

  1. Exercise 3 Design and analysis of the strongest tower

This exercise is used in the study program modules of both levels as an additional activity to form teams to solve other tasks. The task develops a series of abilities that are important for teamwork, quick decision-making, and engineering imagination to be strengthened and developed. Topics involved in the student activities cover ideas generation and evaluation, design of mechanical structures using computer-aided design (CAD) software, and use of the tools of computer-aided engineering for simulation of mechanical structures. The exercise is also offered for non-formal education courses at the university.

  1. Exercise 4 Digitalization engineering

This task is integrated into the study module T130B178 Technological Machines and Tools taught in second-level programs Production Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The task is carried out according to the teaching methodology of problem-based learning. The following student skills are developed in this task and module: the ability to apply ideas generation and evaluation methods, to design and improve mechanical structures using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, to calculate parameters necessary for the designed part using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software), to analyse calculation (analyses) results and to optimise designed 3D CAD model (structure), to use 3D printing equipment, to prepare printed models for assembly and testing, to communicate effectively, take (decisions) solutions as a team.

  1. Exercise 5 Designing, manufacturing and inspection of various mechanical parts

This assignment is part of the settlement for a postgraduate module T210M032 Integrated CAD/CAE/CAM Systems. During this task, student works in teams and competes on which group will design and create the part which has better durability and/or is less expensive than analogues. During the stages of this task, students are going to use different stages of digital prototyping processes: Conceptual Design, Engineering and Manufacturing (CAD, CAM); later stages – inspection of the manufactured part. The added value of this project understanding of interlinks between engineering design and production.
